AP Athletes of the Year

History

The Associated Press in 1931 pioneered an idea that has since been imitated by many other organizations and publications: An Athlete of the Year award.

The idea was probably inspired by the AAU's Sullivan Award, which goes to the U. S. amateur athlete of the year. However, the AP award went considerably further in several ways.

First, it is open to professional athletes as well as amateurs. Second, and most unusual for the time at which it originated, a female athlete of the year is honored along with the male winner. And, finally, the AP award can be won any number of times by an individual, while the Sullivan Award can be won only once, no matter how well the athlete performs in subsequent years.

The awards are voted on by a panel of AP sports editors from across the country.
