The National Basketball Association established the Podoloff Cup, named for Maurice Podoloff, the league's first commissioner, as the its Most Valuable Player award for the 1955-56 season.
The winner was originally chosen by the NBA players. Since 1981, it has been based on a poll of professional basketball broadcasters and writers.
During its nine seasons, the American Baskeball Association also presented an MVP award based on a poll of players.
