History
The cruiserweight class was created by the World Boxing Council in 1979, with a weight limit of 190 pounds. The first match for the title was staged between Marvin Camel and Mate Parlov on Dec. 8 of that year. It ended in a draw, but Camel won the rematch on March 31, 1980 to become the first cruiserweight champion.
The weight limit was later increased to 195 pounds and has been 200 pounds since 2003.
The World Boxing Association added the division in 1982, the International Boxing Federation in 1983, the World Boxing Organization in 1989. The weight division is also known as the junior heavyweight division.
Only those bouts are included in which the championship changed hands or the championships of two or more governing bodies were unified.
