History
The Breeders Crown was established in 1984 as a series of eight major races for Standardbred horses.
Originally, there were races for two- and three-year-old trotters and pacers, both fillies and colts.
Races for aged (over three years old) trotters and pacers were added in 1985. The following year, separate races were added for aged mares, but the open mare trot was discontinued after 1995.
The Breeders Crown races are held in two installments. Races for horses older than 3 years, the so-called "open" category, are run in late July at one track. The races for 2- and 3-year-olds are run in late October at another track.
