History
The American Automobile Association, the first sanctioning body for auto racing in the United States, established the national driving championship in 1909.
In 1956, the U. S. Auto Club was founded to take over sanctioning from the AAA, which wanted to focus on its membership program. The USAC continued the driver championship.
USAC was supplanted by Championship Auto Racing Teams, Inc., in 1979.
