History
The U. S. Figure Skating Association (USFSA) established its hall of fame in 1976 with the induction of 20 charter members. The association was then based in Boston. In 1979, it moved to Colorado Springs, CO, where the hall of fame became part of a museum attached to the USFSA headquarters.
When the International Skating Union held its annual congress in Colorado Springs in 1984, ISU President Olaf Poulson announced that the USFSA Hall of Fame would become known as the World Skating Hall of Fame, since many of the inductees were from countries other than the United States.
The USFSA established a separate U. S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1991 to honor American skaters and contributors to the sport who might not be eligible for the world hall of fame. All American inductees in the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame are also automatically included in the U. S. hall.
Skate Canada inaugurated its hall of fame in 1990. There are inductees in four categories: Athletes, builders, coaches, and officials.
