Named for the first great U. S. hockey player, who was killed in a plane crash during World War I, this award goes to the outstanding college hockey player of the year.
Hobey Baker played hockey, as well as football, golf, swimming, and track, at Princeton and starred with the St. Nicholas Arena amateur team before the war.
The award was first given in 1981 by the Decathlon Athletic Club of Bloomington, MN. Players are nominated by their college coaches. The field is narrowed to 10 in a preliminary vote and then further cut down to three finalists, the so-called "Hobey Hat Trick" group.
The winner is chosen through balloting by a national panel of sportswriters, broadcasters, college coaches and professional scouts.
