History
This trophy was established in 1977 by Thomas Broderick, founder and owner of a sports apparel company that bears his name. Honda took over sponsorship in 1987.
The award goes to the outstanding woman athlete of the year in NCAA competition, as chosen by a panel of college athletic directors. One woman is nominated from each NCAA competitive sport. The winner of the Broderick Award as the women's collegiate basketball player of the year is an automatic nominee.
