The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission established this award for college baseball's best catcher in 2000. It is named for Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench, who starred with the Cincinnati Reds.
The winner is selected by Division I baseball coaches and announced during the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
