History
The Players' Choice Awards grew out of the comeback player of the year award first presented by the Major League Players Association (MLPA) in 1992.
The MLPA replaced that in 1993 with an outstanding player award, presented to a player in each league. The list was expanded to include outstanding pitchers and outstanding rookies in 1994.
In 1997, the comeback player awards were restored and a man of the year award, given to a single player, was added. An overall player of the year award was initiated in 1998. The man of the year award is now named for Marvin Miller, the first executive director of the MLPA. It is based on contributions to the community as well as a player's performance on the field.
Winners of the awards are determined through a ballot of all MLPA members over a two-day period in mid-September. The winners are not announced until early November.
