NAIA Men's Basketball

History

A group of Kansas City businessmen got together in 1937 to organize a college basketball tournament to replace the Amateur Athletic Union tournament, which had moved to Denver.

The result was the National Small College Basketball Tournament, which featured the champions of eight Midwestern conferences. The field expanded to 32 teams in 1938 and in 1940 the National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball (NAIB) was founded to run the tournament and to estblish standards of eligibility for member schools and conferences.

The NAIB was renamed the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in 1952, when it added national championships in golf, tennis, and track. The NAIA in 1991 reorganized into two divisions and began conducting basketball tournaments for both divisions in 1992.
