NBA 2003-04 Season

Summary

The Minnesota Timberwolves had the best record in the Western Conference with 58 wins, finishing one game ahead of the defending champion San Antonio Spurs in the Midwest Division, while the Los Angeles Lakers led the Pacific Division with 56 victories.

Minnesota's Kevin Garnett, who had joined the team right of high school in 1995, was named the league's MVP. He was the first player to lead the NBA in both total points and total rebounds since Bob McAdoo in 1974-75. The previous season's MVP, Tim Duncan, finished a distant second in the balloting, as Garnett received 120 of the 123 first-place votes.

The Indiana Pacers led the league and the Eastern Conference with 61 wins, 7 games ahead of the Detroits Pistons in the Central Division. The New Jersey Nets led the Atlantic Divison with just 47 victories.

Despite Indiana's record, NBA analysts generally agreed that the league champion would come from the west. The Lakers were especially favored by many of them. Los Angeles had loaded up by signing two aging stars, forward Karl Malone and guard Gary Payton in what figured to be a last attempt to win a championship with Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant, who was due to become a free agent when the season ended.

Sure enough, the Lakers blew by the Houston Rockets in five games, beat the Spurs in six games, the won another six-game series over Minesota to reach the finals, while the Pacers were defeated by the Pistons in the Eastern Conference finals.

The Pistons then shocked the basketball world by winning the first game of the championship series at Los Angeles. As the series went on, each Detroit win became less shocking. Using ferocious team defense and a well-balanced offense, Detroit won four out of five against to the Lakers to win the NBA title for the first time since 1990.

Point guard Chauncey Billups of Detroit was named MVP of the finals, though several analysts thought the trophy could well have gone to the entire team. The bottom line: Detroit had five players who averaged double figures in the playoffs, while the Lakers had only two, O'Neal and Bryant.
