NCAA Field Hockey Championships

History

Twelve women's sports were added to the NCAA championship program for the 1981-82 school year. The first national championship events were staged Nov. 21-22, 1981, in cross-country and field hockey.

Field hockey championships have been held in all three NCAA divisions since the beginning.

Before the NCAA took over jurisdiction of women's sports, the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) conducted national championships in many sports, including field hockey.

The first AIAW national college field hockey championship was held in 1975. Division II and III championships were added in 1979. The AIAW held its final championships during the 1981-82 school year.
