History
The National Collegiate Athletic Association, at its annual convention in January of 1981, voted to begin conducting national championship events for women during the 1981-82 school year.
Championships in nine sports, including swimming and diving (considered a single sport), were established that year.
The first National Collegiate Women's Swimming and Diving Championship was hosted by the University of Florida in March of 1982.
Florida won that first meet, but since then Texas and Stanford have dominated, winning 15 of the 16 team championships between 1983 and 1998. However, the University of Georgia had won three straight team titles before the streak was broken by Auburn in 2002.
