NCAA Men's Division I Hockey

History

For its first ten years, 1948 through 1957, the NCAA ice hockey tournament was hosted by the Broadmoor Resort in Colorado Springs. In 1958, a selection committee was named to pick a tournament site.

Generally, the site alternates between the east and the west, but Boston Garden hosted the tournament from 1972 through 1974.

There were originally four teams in the tournament, two from the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and two from the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference. The field was expanded to eight in 1981, with the ECAC, WCHA, and Central Collegiate Hockey Associations getting automatic berths, while the other five teams were at-large selections, two from the west and three from the east.

Currently, 12 teams enter regional competition in the east and the west, two each from the WCHA, the ECAC, the CCHA, and Hockey East, with four others selected at large. The top two teams from each region play in the final round.
