History

The first intercollegiate lacrosse tournament was held in 1881, with Harvard beating Princeton, 3-0, in the championship game.

The following year, Harvard, New York University, and Princeton organized a college lacrosse association. Boston University, Columbia, Cornell, and Stevens Institute quickly joined the new group.

The association chose an annual champion, based on regular season records. In the meantime, an Inter-University Lacrosse League was founded, using a somewhat different set of rules. The two groups merged into the U. S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse League (USILL) in 1905.

The USILL was reorganized in 1929 as the U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA), which continued the USILL's practice of selecting a champion at the close of the season.

In 1936, the family of W. Wilson Wingate presented a memorial trophy named for him to be presented to the USILA champion. Wingate was a sportswriter for Baltimore newspapers who had played lacrosse in college and often covered the sport. He's credited with nicknaming lacrosse "the fastest game on two feet."

The National Collegiate Athletic Association held its first national tournament in 1971. The Wingate Memorial Trophy was presented to the first two NCAA champions and was then retired.

The NCAA added its Division II lacrosse championship tournament in 1972 and the Division III tournament in 1980.
