History
In 1983, a year after the NCAA began conducting championships for women, the Division I indoor track and field meet was added to the championship program. It's held in conjunction with the men's championship meet.
A system of qualifying standards is used to select a maximum of 270 athletes for the meet. Those who match or exceed certain standards during the indoor season automatically qualify. A set of provisional standards is used to fill out the field for an event, as necessary.
