History
Outdoor track and field was among the twelve women's sports added to the NCAA championship schedule during the 1981-82 school year.
The first Division I meet was held in April of 1982 at Brigham Young University. UCLA won the team championship the first two years. However, Louisiana St. then emerged as the dominant school, winning 10 consecurive titles and 12 over a 16-year period. Competiton has been much more balanced over the last several years.
The women's outdoor meet is held in conjunction with the men's meet.
