History

Tennis was one of the twelve sports taken over by the NCAA from the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women beginning with the 1981-82 school year.

The first championship tournament was held at Salt Lake City in 1982. The next three tournaments were also hosted by cities, but since 1986 colleges have served as hosts.

Preliminary competition is held in six regions, with the top two teams in each region advancing to the finals, along with four other that are selected at large.
