NCAA Division II Men's Basketball

Table of Contents

History

The NCAA established a College Division for smaller schools, effective with the 1956-57 school year. The division's first basketball championship finals were hosted by the University of Evansville in 1957.

In 1973, the NCAA went to a three-division format, and the College Division became known as Division II.

There were originally 32 teams in the tournament. The first year, the first and second-round games were played on the campuses of participating schools and eight teams moved on to the finals. In 1958, eight four-team regional tournaments were held.

The field expanded to 48 teams in 1995, with 16 teams receiving first-round byes.
