NCAA Division III Women's Basketball

Table of Contents

History

In 1973, the NCAA switched from two divisions to a three-division format. The schools that had previously been in the College Division were moved into Division II or III.

The first Division III women's basketball tournament was held in 1982 at Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, PA, and the host school won the championship.

There were originally 16 teams in the tournament. That was increased to 32 teams in 1983.
