1922

The APFA became the National Football League
The Chicago Staleys became the Chicago Bears
Cincinnati Celts, Cleveland Tigers, Detroit Heralds, Muncie Flyers, New York Giants, Tonawanda Kardex and Washington Senators folded
Milwaukee Badgers, Oorang Indians (of Marion, OH), Racine Legion, and Toledo Maroons added

1923

Columbus Panhandles became the Columbus Tigers
Evansville Crimson Giants folded
Cleveland Indians, Duluth Kelleys, and St. Louis All-Stars added

1924

Buffalo All-Americans became Buffalo Bisons
Toledo Maroons became the Kenosha Maroons
Racine Legion franchise became inactive for two seasons
Cleveland Indians and Canton Bulldogs merged as the Cleveland Bulldogs
Louisville Brecks, Oorang Indians, St. Louis All-Stars and folded
Frankford Yellow Jackets and Kansas City Blues added

1925

Kansas City Blues became the Kansas City Cowboys
Columbus Tigers, Kenosha Maroons, and Minneapolis Marines folded
Canton Bulldogs re-joined
Detroit Panthers, New York Giants, Providence Steam Roller, and Pottsville Maroons added

1926

Akron Pros/Indians became the Akron Indians
Buffalo Bisons became the Buffalo Rangers
Duluth Kelleys became the Duluth Eskimos
Cleveland Bulldogs and Rochester Jeffersons folded
Racine Legion resumed play as the Racine Tornadoes
Rock Island Independents left for the American Football League
Brooklyn Lions, Hartford Blues, Los Angeles Buccaneers, and Louisville Colonels added

1927

1933

Boston Braves became the Boston Redskins

1937

Boston Redskins became the Washington Redskins
Cleveland Rams added

1941

Pittsburgh Pirates became Pittsburgh Steelers

1943

Cleveland Rams suspended operations for one season
Eagles and Steelers merged as the Phil-Pitt Steagles for one season

1944

Cardinals and Steelers merged as Card-Pitt for one season
Brooklyn Dodgers became the Brooklyn Tigers
Boston Yanks added

1945

Brooklyn Tigers and Boston Yanks merged for one season

1946

Cleveland Rams moved to Los Angeles
Brooklyn Tigers folded

1949

Boston Yanks became New York Bulldogs

1950

New York Bulldogs became New York Yanks
The All-America Football Conference folded; the Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Colts joined the NFL for the 1950 season

1951

Baltimore Colts folded

1952

New York Yanks folded, were replaced by the Dallas Texans

1953

Dallas Texans folded, were replaced by the Baltimore Colts

1960

Dallas Cowboys added

1961

The Boston Patriots, Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, Houston Oilers, Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, Oakland Raiders, and San Diego Chargers entered the NFL in the merger with the AFL

1971

Boston Patriots became the New England Patriots

1976

Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers added

1982

Oakland Raiders moved to Los Angeles

1984

Baltimore Colts moved to Indianapolis

1988

The St. Louis Cardinals moved to Phoenix

1994

Phoenix Cardinals renamed the Arizona Cardinals

1995

Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars added
