NHL 1921-22 Season

Summary

The NHL got rid of its split-season schedule and instead adopted a playoff format in which the first- and second-place teams from the regular season met in a two-game, total-goals series to determine the league championship. The Ottawa finished in first place but lost to the Toronto St. Pats in the playoff series.

A third professional league was added to the Stanley Cup mix: The Western Canada Hockey League. The Regina Capitals beat the Calgary Tigers in a playoff to determine the second-place team and then upset the first-place Edmonton Eskimos in the league's first championship series.

The Pacific Coast Hockey Association's second-place team, the Vancouver Millionaires, also won that league's championship with two 1-0 victories over the Seattle Metropolitans.

Vancouver then beat Regina in a two-game, total-goals series to win the right to challenge Toronto in the Stanley Cup series. The St. Pats won in five games after begin down, two games to one.
