NHL 1927-28 Season

Summary

Howie Morenz had an outstanding season for the Motnreal Canadiens, leading the NHL in both goals and assists (and, obviously, in scoring) to win the Hart Trophy as the league's MVP. He led his team to a first-place finish in the Canadian Division, but the Canadiens were upset in the playoffs by that other Montreal team, the Maroons.

The American Division's second-place team, the New York Rangers, also beat the first-place team, the Boston Bruins, to move into the Stanley Cup finals.

New York's home rink, Madison Square Garden, wasn't available because a circus was in town, so the entire championship series was played in Montreal. The Maroons won the first game. In the second game, Ranger goalie Lorne Chabot was injured and New York had no backup available, so 44-year-old coach Lester Patrick put himself in and made 18 saves in a 2-1 overtime victory.

After Montreal won Game 3, the Rangers won the next two to take the best-of-five series and the Stanley Cup. They were the first U.S.-based NHL team to win the trophy, although the Seattle Metropolitans had won in 1917, just before the league was organized.
