NHL 1941-42 Season

Summary

After operating the New York Americans since 1936, the NHL made manager Red Dutton the team's owner. He changed the name to the Brooklyn Americans. The Americans practiced in Brooklyn, but still played their home games in Madison Square Garden and they still finished last.

The other MSG occupants, the New York Rangers, rose to the top of the league. They had three of the NHL's top scorers, led by Bryan Hextall's league-leading 56 points. Lynn Patrick led the league in goals and Phil Watson was the assists leader.

But the Rangers lost to the second-place Toronto Maple Leafs in the semi-finals, while the fourth-place Detroit Red Wings got past Chicago and Montreal to reach the finals. Detroit then won the first two games at Toronto and the third game at home and were on the verge of the Stanley Cup championship.

They couldn't win that fourth game, though. The Red Wings took four in a row to win their first Stanley Cup championship since 1932.
