History
Originally the Hart Trophy, this award was donated to the NHL in 1923 by Dr. David A. Hart, father of Cecil Hart, former manager-coach of the Montreal Canadiens.
The original trophy was retired to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1960. The NHL then presented the Hart Memorial Trophy as a replacement.
The trophy is awarded to the NHL player "adjudged to be most valuable to his team," as selected by vote of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association.
