History
Named for Georges Vezina, the great Canadien goaltender who collapsed during an NHL game in 1925 and subsequently died of tuberculosis, this trophy was presented to the NHL by the owners of the Montreal Canadiens.
It was originally awarded to the goaltender or goaltenders of the team that allowed the fewest goals during the regular season.
Since the 1981-82 season, the Vezina Trophy has gone to the goaltender "adjudged to be the best as his position" by vote of the league's general managers. (The Jennings Trophy is now awarded for fewest goals allowed.)
