Background

It might seem that the shortest elapsed time should equate to the highest speed, but it doesn't work that way in drag racing.

Elapsed time, obviously, is the time it takes for the vehicle to travel from the start to the finish line of the standard quarter-mile course. The speed is measured only during the last 66 feet of the run, however.

The National Hot Rod Association keeps records in both categories.
