History
The Davey O'Brien Memorial Trophy was originally awarded to the outstanding college player in the Southwest by the Davey O'Brien Educational and Charitable Trust of Ft. Worth, Texas.
In 1981, it was renamed the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award and it has since been given to the nation's outstanding college quarterback.
The award is named for the Texas Christian University quarterback who won the 1938 Heisman Trophy.
