Olympic Medalists: Badminton

History

Badminton was a demonstration sport at the 1972 Olympics and became a medal event in 1992. Originally, finalists were determined through a round-robin tournament, followed by a single-elimination tournament for the top finishers, who were seeded based on their round robin records. The semifinal losers were awarded joint bronze medals.

Since 1996, the whole tournament has been single elimination. The top eight ranked players are seeded and the other eight are placed in a blind draw. The losers in the semifinal round now play for the bronze medal.

The mixed doubles championship was added in 1996.
