History
Men's field hockey has been an Olympic sport since 1908 and women's field hockey was added to the program in 1980.
In 1920 and 1932, the men's standings were determined by a round robin tournament and the women's version of the sport used a round robin tournament in 1980 and 1984.
In all other years, a single-elimination tournament has been used, with a championship game to decide the gold and silver medals. For those years, the score shown under "Final" is the score of the gold medal game.
The tournaments begin with two pools of teams playing preliminary round tournaments. In men's play, the top two teams in each pool advance to the semi-finals. In the women's tournament, the top three teams advance.
