History
Taekwondo was a demonstration sport in 1988 and 1992 and became a medal sport in 2000.
In Olympic taekwondo competition, there are two pools, each with its own single-elimination tournament. The two pool winners compete for the gold medal, with the loser winning the silver medal.
In each pool, the competitors who lost to the pool winner before the semifinals enter another single-elimination tournament. The winners and the losing semifinalists then compete for the bronze medal.
