History
Team handball was on the Olympic program at Berlin in 1936, as an outdoor sport with 11 players per team. Then it disappeared until 1952, when it was a demonstration sport.
In 1972, the indoor version, which has seven players a team, became a men's Olympic sport. The women's sport was added in 1976.
Teams are divided into two pools to play round robin tournaments, with the top four teams from each pool advancing into a single elimination medal round. The score shown is the final score of the gold medal game.
From 1976 until 1988, women's medals were decided by a round robin tournament only. For those years, the won-lost record of the gold medal team is shown.
