History
The triathlon entered the Olympics faster than any other sport. Created in 1974, it became an Olympic sport in 2000.
The original triathlon, as represented in the Ironman competitions, is made up of a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile cycling leg, and a full marathon of 26 miles, 385 yards.
However, in the Olympics, as in other international triathlons, the distances are much shorter: a 1.5-kilometer swim, 40-kilometer bicycle ride, and 10-kilometer run.
