The hall of fame was established in 1983 by the U. S. Olympic Committee. At this point, it exists only on paper. A museum building had been planned, but construction has been held up for lack of funding. No elections were held from 1992 through 2003.
With sponsorship from Coca-Cola, the USOC again began looking into the possibility of holding more elections and ultimately building a home for the hall.
In 2004, a new class was inducted for the first time in twelve years, with Allstate as the presenting sponsor. The class of ten included eight athletes, one team, and one special contributor.
Since then, inductions have been held in 2005, 2008, and 2009.
