History

The Jesse Owens Award was established in 1981 by USA Track and Field to be presented to the country's outstanding athlete of the year.

Originally, just one award was given annually. Since 1996, separate Owens awards have been to the outstanding male and female performers of the year.

Note: The American-International Athlete Award was formerly known as the Jesse Owens International Trophy.
