The PGA Championship

History

Rodman Wanamaker, son of the Philadelphia department store magnate, called a meeting of golf pros in early 1916 and offered to donate $2,580 as prize money for a tournament if the golfers agreed to form a national organization.

As a result, the Professional Golfers Association of America was founded in June of that year and the association's championship tournament was held at Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, New York, from Oct. 10 through 16. Also at Wanamaker's suggestion, it was a match-play tournament.

Long Jim Barnes beat Jock Hutchison Sr. in the final match. Because of World War I, the tournament wasn't held again until 1919, when Barnes successfully defended his title with a 6-and-5 victory over Fred McLeod.

Because of the constraints of television, the tournament was switched to stroke play in 1958.
