History

The Federación Internacional de Polo (FIP) held the first world championship in 1987. It was a round-robin tournament.

Although Mexico tied Argentina in the final game, Argentina won the championship because it had the most wins in the tournament and Mexico finished second with the next largest number of victories.

In 1989, the championship became a single-elimination tournament. The tournament has been held every three years since then.
