History
The Presidents Cup is a team match play event between professional golfers from the United States and those from the rest of the world, excluding Europe.
The first two Presidents Cup events were played at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia.
In 1998, when the matches were hosted by Australia's Royal Melbourne Club, the international team won its first championship. In the year 2000, the event returned to the Robert Trent Jones site.
Each team is made up of 12 golfers, 10 mandatory choices plus two players selected by the team captain. The mandatory choices for the U. S. team are based on money winnings over the previous two years on the PGA tour. Those for the international team are based on the Official World Golf Rankings at the conclusion of the Tour Championship. However, players eligible for the European Ryder Cup team are not included.
The Presidents Cup is contest in alternate years, when there is no Ryder Cup competition. Because the Ryder Cup was postponed to 2002 in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Presidents Cup was also postponed for a year. It was held in November of 2003 at the Links Course in George, South Africa.
The 2005 competition was staged in September, again at the Robert Trent Jones GC.
