Game Summary

The St. Louis Rams were called "the greatest show on turf" because of their high-flying offense. The New England Patriots, on the other hand, had gone 5-11 the year before, and surprised people first by winning their division championship and then by beating the Oakland Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers to become AFC champions.

The Patriots were 14-point underdogs, but they had one big surprise left for the experts. They held St. Louis to only 3 points over the first three quarters while scoring 17 of them.

The Rams came back with two fourth-quarter touchdowns to tie the score with just a minute and a half to play, and it looked as though a Super Bowl would go into overtime for the first time in history.

But quarterback Tom Brady, who had taken over for an injured Drew Bledsoe in the second game of the season, calmly moved the Patriots to the St. Louis 31-yard line. Then Adam Vinatieri just as calmly kicked the game-winning field goal from 48 yards away as time ran out.
