Soccer: European Championship

The Henri Delaunay Trophy is awarded to the winner of the European Football Championship, which is held every four years, in the even-numbered year between World Cup tournaments.

Delaunay came up with the idea of a European championship in 1927, but the first tournament wasn't played until 1960, five years after his death.

National teams compete in the tournament. The 2004 championship was hosted by Portugal.
