Originally the King Fahd Cup, this trophy was established in 1992 for competition among the continental champions of Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and South America.

The FIFA took charge of the tournament in 1997 and renamed it the Confederations Cup for the King Fahd Trophy. The competition is held bi-annually, in odd-numbered years.
