The Copa America is awarded for this competition among South American national teams, which is second only to the Olympics as the oldest international soccer tournament.

The tournament was first played in 1916 and it was played at varying intervals until 1959. From 1959 through 1983, it was held every four years. It's now held in every odd-numbered year.
