The Amateur Athletic Union established this trophy in 1930, in memory of James E. Sullivan, the long-time AAU secretary-treasurer. Its formal name is the James E. Sullivan Memorial Trophy.
It is awarded to the athlete who, "by his or her performance, example and influence as an amateur, has done the most during the year to advance the cause of sportsmanship."
Although it's sometimes referred to as the "amateur athlete of the year award," it cannot go to the same athlete more than once.
