History
The Amateur Athletic Union, the original governing body for gymnastics in the United States, staged the first nationl championships in 1897. Women's championship events were added in 1932.
A group of athletes and coaches left the AAU in 1963 to form the U. S. Gymnastics Federation (USGF), which held its first national championship meet that year.
In 1971, the USGF was recognized by the International Olympic Committee as the national governing body for that sport, and the AAU discontinued its championships. The USGF is now known as USA Gymnastics.
The following lists show the AAU men's all-around champions from 1897 through 1970 and the women's all-around champions from 1931 through 1970, followed by the USGF champions since its first meet.
