History
Established in 1887, the U. S. women's singles championship was played at the Philadelphia Cricket Club until 1920, when it was held in conjunction with the men's championships at the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, New York.
There were two tournaments in 1968 and 1969, the national amateur, and the Open. The national amateur championship was held at Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, in 1968 and at Rochester, New York, in 1969, while the Open remained at Forest Hills.
Since 1970, there has been a single national championship for both amateurs and professionals.
