History
Since 1990, the U. S. Independence Cup has been the national championship for sailors with disabilities. The trophy is named for Chandler "Buzz" Hovey Jr., who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1947 but nevertheless continued sailing and racing until his retirement in 1981.
Racing has been conducted in singlehanded and doublehanded divisions since 2002. A triple-handed championship, for crews comprising two disabled sailors and one able-bodied sailor, was added in 2007.
