History
This trophy, established by the Professional Golfers Association of America in 1937, was named in honor of the great British golfer Harry Vardon.
From 1937 through 1941, it was awarded to the player who had the best overall record on the PGA tour, based on a point system.
The award was suspended from 1942 through 1946. Since it was restored to competition in 1947, it has gone to the player with the lowest stroke average in tour events. To be eligible, a golfer has to play at least 60 official tournament rounds.
