History
Although the World Indoor Games held in Paris in 1985 weren't officially designated as world track and field championships, the results are included here for the sake of completeness.
The success of the 1985 games did persuade the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) to begin holding the indoor world championships in 1987. They were held every two years through 2003. Since 2004, they have taken place in even-numbered years.
The sites have been: 1987, Indianapolis; 1989, Budapest, Hungary; 1991, Seville, Spain; 1993, Toronto; 1995, Barcelona, Spain; 1997, Paris, France; 1999, Maebashi, Japan; 2001, Lisbon, Portugal; 2003, Birmingham, England; 2004, Budapest, Hungary; 2006, Moscow, Russia; 2008, Valencia, Spain.
