History
The World Croquet Federation (WCF) held its first world association croquet championship tournament in 1989 at the Hurlingham Club in London. There were 80 players from nine countries, but 46 of them were English—not just because of the location, but also because it was held in conjunction with the English Open Championship. Joe Hogan, one of six entrants from New Zealand, won the event.
The next two tournaments were also held at Hurlingham, but the 1993 championship was staged at the Casino in Newport, Rhode Island, home of the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Since then, tournaments have been held in Australia, France, and New Zealand as well as England.
The championship has been rather irregular since 1992. After a three-year layoff, the tenth tournament was conducted at Cheltenham, England, in August of 2005. The women's championship was added that year.
In 1996, the WCF also began holding a world golf croquet championship tournament for men. At first annual, that tournament has been biennial since 1998.
The first women's world golf croquet championship was hosted by Egypt in November of 2005.
